On Sunday, September 7, our regular sangha was combined with our monthly Full Moon Loving Kindness and Compassion Meditation. In his talk, Fred introduced the Four Immeasurables—loving-kindness (metta), compassion (karuna), joy in others’ happiness (mudita), and equanimity (upekkha)—as practices that expand our hearts beyond their typical barriers and support us in becoming kind and compassionate beings in our daily life. He emphasized the Mahayana vision of extending compassion impartially to all beings, rather than limiting care to those we naturally like or feel close to.
Acknowledging that there is a common human tendency to significantly restrict our kindness and compassion to family, friends, and pets, Fred challenged us to include neutral or even people we have aversion to (i.e. everyone!). He offered several guided meditations that encouraged reflection on the randomness of relationships and the shared humanity of all beings. By consciously wishing happiness and freedom from suffering for everyone, we can dismantle habitual barriers of preference and aversion.
Fred addressed practical concerns raised by sangha participants, such as distinguishing people from their harmful actions, working with jealousy in intimate relationships, and balancing unconditional love with discernment to avoid enabling unwholesome behavior. He underscored that compassion must be paired with wisdom to be authentic and effective.
